Stairwells in Hamburg city centre
They are everywhere – and yet they are usually overlooked: beautiful staircases in Hamburg’s old town. Join me on this staircase tour and discover the ornamental art that lies behind the inconspicuous doors of old office buildings!
We begin our tour at the NIVEA House on Jungfernstieg, where we first immerse ourselves in the world of the turn of the last century (1900) and learn about the redevelopment of Hamburg’s city centre. The Great Fire of 1842, the cholera epidemic of 1892 and Hamburg’s annexation to the German Empire have all left their mark. On a small site in Hamburg’s city centre, there are various office buildings with impressive staircases and stairwells that you simply must see!
As a qualified tour guide in Hamburg, I will explain the background to the various architectural styles, point out unknown details and take you into stairwells that you might never have entered on your own. You will discover a wooden night watchman, decorative oak leaves, floral tiles, oriental motifs, two centuries-old Hamburg companies and a very simple-looking staircase. Do you think Hamburg’s staircases are boring? Come with me and I will convince you otherwise! Each tour is flexible and can be tailored to your individual needs. Please contact me.
