#Spices in #Hamburg
When one thinks of spices, perhaps the first thing that comes to mind is the cuisine of India or oriental markets. But Germany also has a long tradition of the spice trade, especially in the #HanseaticCityOfHamburg. And where could you learn more about spices than in the Spice Museum in Hamburg's #Speicherstadt?
#SpicysSpiceMuseum is a place full of tastes, smells and history. Here you can experience the variety of spices that were brought to Europe by the old trade routes. From familiar spices like #pepper, #cinnamon and #nutmeg to more exotic varieties like #galangal, #sumac and #turmeric, there is much to discover. The #museum staff regularly offer lectures on the differences in pepper or on spices that are currently in high demand, such as the #tonkabean.
Yet despite this rich history and diversity and the many health benefits of spices, many Germans still seem hesitant when it comes to seasoning their dishes with anything other than pepper and salt. Perhaps out of laziness or fear of too much #spiciness, although #spicy is #healthy. However, the Spice Museum shows how much more flavour and variety can be added to dishes when spices are used correctly.
The importance of the #spicetrade for the economic development of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg cannot be underestimated. The #PortOfHamburg has always been an important trading centre and hub for the #import and #export of goods from all over the world. Spices were an important part of this trade and helped make Hamburg one of the richest European cities. Even today, the port of Hamburg is one of the largest transhipment centres for spices in Europe.
The Spice Museum is thus not only a place to learn more about spices, but also a place to appreciate the economic importance of the spice trade for Hamburg. Here you can see how the trade in spices has shaped the city and how important it still is for the local economy. It is a place full of flavours and taste experiences. Try it out!

Guided Tours Speicherstadt. The #UNESCOWorldHeritage site, is an architectural and cultural gem located in the heart of #Hamburg, #Germany. The district is famous for its stunning brick architecture, which was used in the construction of the buildings in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The district was built as a free port to facilitate the trade of goods and merchandise, and the design of the buildings was heavily influenced by the Dutch architecture of the time.
Built in Brick
The Speicherstadt was constructed using millions of bricks, which were sourced from local brickworks. The bricks were carefully laid by expert masons, and the result is a striking landscape of red #brick buildings and canals that is unlike anything else in the world. The district was built on a foundation of wooden piles, which were driven deep into the marshy ground to provide a stable base for the buildings.
Free Trade Zone
The Speicherstadt was a free port, which means that it was exempt from customs duties and taxes. This made it an attractive location for businesses to set up shop, and the district quickly became a hub for trade and commerce. The district was also home to a variety of industries, including coffee roasting, tea blending, and spice grinding.
Museums and event locations
Today, the Speicherstadt is a popular tourist destination and is home to a variety of museums, restaurants, and shops. Visitors can explore the canals by boat, visit the #MiniaturWunderland model railway exhibition, or learn about the history of the district at the #Speicherstadtmuseum. The district is also home to a variety of specialty shops, including a shop that sells exotic teas and a shop that sells vintage vinyl records.
In recent years, the #Speicherstadt has undergone a significant #transformation, with many of the historic buildings being renovated and repurposed. The district is now home to a variety of modern office buildings, hotels, and luxury apartments, which sit alongside the historic buildings that have been preserved for future generations to enjoy.
