International Tourist Guide Day in Hamburg

Hamburg for Hamburgers on International Tourist Guide Day

Every year around February 21, tourist guides around the world organise events to which the residents of the regions in which they guide are invited. The aim is to raise awareness of our profession, increase the acceptance of tourism and show residents the beauty of their own region. The day marks the foundation of the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA) some 30 odd years ago. As I am the president of the Hamburg Guide Association, I worked hard to have my colleagues participate. – And it worked!

In Hamburg two tourist guide associations keep the qualification and further education of tourist guides in the city up and running: Hamburg Guides and Hamburger Gästeführerverein. We Hamburg Guides try to qualify approximately 15 tourist guides every year in order to keep up with the growing demand for guided tours in the city.

On this day, Hamburg Guides work free of charge, but on the remaining 364 days of the year they exercise a paid profession that is highly complex. “Guides are multi-talented” – from imparting knowledge with a fun factor, to a practiced photographic eye, to local orientation knowledge that at least equals that of a cab, they take care of the guests – sometimes in different languages – organise a programme, solve conflicts, master various challenges, constantly further educate themselves and are not only independently entrepreneurial but “public” ambassadors of their regions.
