On Friday, July 17, 2015, I set off with three individual tour guests from Brazil and the USA to the Neuengamme concentration camp memorial. We read, hear and learn so much about this topic, but couldn’t even imagine it, said my guests, who had separated themselves from the rest of the group and thus from the shopping and the “light” city tour. Crowded streets meant that we only had an hour in the memorial itself. We were still able to learn all sorts of things there, as I had organized a colleague who was very familiar with the site. He not only guided us through the exhibition, but also past the “gas chamber”, the SS garages and the brickworks. The prisoners were forced to produce clinker bricks and weapons here under inhumane conditions during the war. This memorial is an important building block against forgetting and I can only recommend a visit! You never stop learning! Many thanks to Christopher, our “guide” on site, and to my guests for taking an interest. Come back again – and we would be happy to take you on a “normal” tour of the city.
